About the artist
Unni Løvlid (1976), well-known and widely traveled singer from Norway is one of Norway's leading folk music vocalists, a versatile musician and experienced with a great variety of projects and genres in Norwegian folk, contemporary music and electronica. Her album RITE was chosen among World Music Central's Best World Music CDs of 2008.
Unni Løvlid is from Hornindal in the county of Sogn og Fjordane in west Norway. She's is one of Norway's leading folk music vocalists. Unni has learned her music from many different sources in Hornindal, including Marta Seljeset Frøland. Her wide- ranging musical activities include concerts and tours in Norway and abroad, and teaching engagements at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Ole Bull Academy.
In 2005 she released her second solo-album. VITA is based entirely on Unni Løvlid's voice, and her presence and intensity as a performer. The recording was made in what has been called one of Oslo's best kept secrets: Emanuel Vigeland's Mausoleum. The dark room is covered with frescoes forming a single huge painting entitled VITA, depicting dramatic scenes from human birth to death.
In 2008 Unni Løvlid returned with a new album, RITE, for which Løvlid has written all the words and music herself. Unni Løvlid is a versatile musician and artist and has experience from a great variety of projects and genres in the region Norwegian folk, contemporary music and electronica. The music on Rite lies somewhere between electronica, contemporary and world. Unni Løvlid is one of the most exciting folk music performers around today, who dares to take traditional music to entirely new places, and has the creative imagination to do so.
In addition to her career as a solo performer Unni is a member of the trio RUSK with Frode Haltli and Vegar Vårdal, and SEVEN WINDS with Rolf-Erik Nystrøm and Becaye Aw.
"Løvlid's voice is pure and direct, completely at ease with all the changing moods." Fiona Talkington, BBC
"Every once in awhile, an album emerges that is so singular that it appears to have dropped out of the sky like a diamond meteorite. Such is the case with the Norwegian vocalist Unni Lovlid's latest CD, Rite. An unnerving mystery" Rootsworld
